Question 1: What had hurt the poet? What was the situation?

Answer: The poet was hurt by taunting laugh of the people as he came last in race with breathing heavily.

Question 2: How did the poet react to his humiliation when he was young?

Answer: He felt pained to his humiliation when he was young and he climbed to the top of the chestnut.

Question 3: What did the poet promise himself? Why?

Answer: The poet promised himself that no son of his would run against his will because he had to run although he was not willing to.

Answer: The situation reversed twenty years later when he felt father’s pride watching his son come striding first to the finish.

Answer: No, he didn’t keep the vow.
