Question 1: Why did Madge and Walt have to work so hard to win over the dog?

Answer: Madge and Walt had to work so hard to win over the dog because he was very unsociable. He also did not allow them to touch him.

Question 2: In what way did Walt ensure that the dog would be returned to him whenever he ran away?

Answer: Walt attached a metal plate to the dogā€™s collar on which his address was written. In this way, Walt ensured that the dog would be returned to him whenever he ran away.

Question 3: What did Madge and Walt notice about Wolfā€™s repeated disappearances? What did they guess from it?

Answer: Madge and Walt noticed that every time the wolf disappeared, he went to the north direction.
They guessed that it was ā€˜Homing instinctā€™ a natural feeling that takes animals or birds to their homes or original living places.

Answer: One day on the trail, Madge and Walt met Skiff Miller. He had come from Klondike, a region in North-Western Canada.

Answer: Madge says this to Skiff Miller. The track or path which led Skiff Miller to his sister Mrs. William Johnsonā€™s house was the right track.

Question 6: How does Miller prove that Brown Wolf was his lead dog?

Answer: Skiff Miller gave some command to the dog and he followed it by making a swinging turn to the right and halting obediently at the command. In this way, Miller proved that Brown Wolf was his lead dog.

Question 7: He lifted one of Wolfā€™s forelegs and examined the footpads. Who is ā€˜heā€™? From Wolfā€™s behaviour in the past, do you think that the dog would have let any stranger touch him like this? Why or why not?

Answer: ā€˜Heā€™ is Skiff Miller. From Wolfā€™s behaviour in the past, the dog would not have let any stranger touch him like this because he was very unfriendly. As Skiff Miller was his master so, he allowed him to touch.

Question 8: This was a new way of looking at it. What were they looking at? What was the new way?

Answer: They were looking at the choice, likes and desires of the dog. The new way of looking at it was whether the dog wanted to stay with Walt and Madge or he wanted to go back with Miller.

Question 9: The man was evidently a humourist. What made Madge think this way about Skiff Miller? Was he really making a joke? Give reasons.

Answer: When Miller was rubbing the footpads of the dog, he barked and it was for the first time, he had ever barked. This made Madge think this way about Skiff Miller that he was evidently a humourist.
No, he was not making a joke. He was the real master of the dog whose name was ā€˜Brownā€™.

Question 10: This was a new way of looking at it and Miller was clearly debating about it in his mind. What was ā€˜itā€™? What do you think was going on in Millerā€™s mind? Why was he debating the matter?

Answer: ā€˜Itā€™ was the dogā€™s own choice. In Millerā€™s mind, a debate was going on. He was debating the matter because he was unsure whether the dog wanted to stay there with Madge and Walt or go back with Miller.

Question 11: Do you think Brown tried to tell Walt, Madge and Miller to stay together? What makes you say so?

Answer: Yes, I think Brown did so because when Miller was leaving that place, the dog went after him, caught his hand between its teeth and tried to stop him but failed.
Failing to do so, Brown raced back to Walt and Madge, tried to convince them to go after Miller to stop him and not let him go. This makes us say so.

Question 12: Do you think Brown made a firm decision in the end? How do you know?

Answer: Yes, I think so because when he started walking on the trail with Miller on his way back home, he not even once turned his head towards Walt and Madge.
