Question 1: What did the clouds say to the speaker?

Answer: The clouds called out the speaker to play from morning till the day ends.

Answer: The clouds said these words to the child.

(b) Why did the speaker say so?

Answer: The speaker wanted to play with the child.

(c) How did the listener react to these words?

Answer: The listener denied to go with the clouds as he was very fond of his mother and didn’t wish to leave her.

Question 3: How did the clouds think of taking the speaker up into the sky?

Answer: The clouds asked the speaker to visit the end of the earth and lift his hands up and they will take him up to the sky.

Question 4: Why did the clouds smile and float away?

Answer: The clouds smiled and floated away as the poet said that he couldn’t leave his mother to meet the clouds, as she was waiting for him which showed the unconditional love between the poet and his mother.

Answer: The child said to the clouds.

(b) Who do ‘I’ and ‘her’ refer to here?

Answer: ‘I’ is the child and ‘her’ is the child’s mother.

(c) Why couldn’t the speaker leave ‘her’?

Answer: The speaker loved his mother very much so he couldn’t leave her.

Question 6: Which game did the speaker want to play with his mother after the clouds went away?

Answer: The speaker wanted to play the game with his mother where he would be the cloud and his mother would be the moon and he will hold her with both his hands, similar to what clouds do in the sky by gathering around the moon.

Question 7: Why did the speaker want to join the waves?

Answer: The speaker wanted to join the Waves as they keep making noises throughout the day and night. They don’t even have a defined path but still they keep moving.

Question 8: How did the speaker plan to play with his mother?

Answer: The speaker planned a better game with his mother where he would be the wave and his mother will be the shore and he will roll on to reach her lap with laughter and nobody will be around to judge him.

(a) What is the poet speaking about in this line?

Answer: The poet is speaking about the waves.

(b) Why do they smile, dance and pass by?

Answer: The waves smile at the child’s love for its mother and go on their way as they cannot stop.

Question 10: Why couldn’t the speaker go with the waves?

Answer: The speaker could not go with the waves by going to the edge of the shore as his mother waited for him in the evening and he could not leave her waiting.

Question 11: In the poem, the child prefers playing with his mother than the elements of nature. Why do you think it is so? What message is conveyed through the poem?

Answer: The child loves his mother more than anything else in the world.
The message conveyed through the poem is that a child prefers basking in the affection of his mother rather than leaving her alone.
