Question 1: Choose the appropriate option.

Answer: I think sense of justice is more important.

Question 3: ‘So strong was their bond of friendship….’ Whose friendship is being referred to in the given line? How can you say that they had a strong bonding?

Answer: The friendship of Jumman Shaikh and Algu Chowdhry is being referred in the given line. When either of them went away from the village, the other looked after his family. This shows that they had a very strong bonding.

Question 4: Why did Jumman’s aunt decide to take her case to the Panchayat?

Answer:  Jumman became indifferent to her as his wife grudged even the little food that his aunt wanted every day. She swallowed these insults for a few months and then spoke to Jumman and requested for a monthly allowance, so that she can set up a separate kitchen for herself. When Jumman did not gave any attention to her request, she got angry and decided to take her case to the Panchayat.

Question 5: What were the reactions of the villagers on listening to the old lady’s case?

Answer: On listening to the old lady’s case some sympathised with her, others laughed at her and a few others advised her to make it up with her nephew and his wife.

Question 6: ‘Algu’s heart sank and he turned pale.’ Why do you think Algu faced this uncomfortable situation?

Answer: During an earlier Panchayat case, Algu was the head Panch and he had given his judgement against Jumman. Since then, Jumman became Algu’s enemy and wanted a revenge. Now, in the present Panchayat case, when Sahu nominated Jumman as the head Panch, Algu got worried and was uncomfortable as he thought that Jumman might take the advantage of the situation and take his revenge by giving his judgement against Algu.

Answer: When Jumman was appointed as a head Panch, he realised that a Panch has no friend or enemy. He knows only justice. Jumman realised his responsibility as a judge and gave a fair judgement.
