Answer: Food is chewed in mouth where it is mixed with saliva that breaks down carbohydrates into simple digestible forms. Thus, proper chewing of food is essential.

Question 6: Define the following:

(a) Nutrients

Answer: The nourishment giving substances present in our food are called nutrients.

(b) Balanced Diet

Answer: A diet that contains all the nutrients along with water and roughage in balanced proportions is called a balanced diet.

(c) Digestion

Answer: Digestion is the process of breakdown of large food molecules into small food molecules so that the nutrients in them can be absorbed by the blood and used by the body.

Question 7: Give reasons:

(a) Fried food and chocolates must be consumed in less quantities.

Answer: Fried food and chocolates must be consumed in less quantities because excess fat and sugar is harmful as it can make one obese and lead to heart disease.

(b) One must eat food rich in fibre.

Answer: One must eat food rich in fibre because fibre from plant foods can promote optimal health of the digestive system, help us manage our weight and even reduce risk of heart disease.

(c) Children must eat food rich in proteins.

Answer: Children must eat food rich in proteins because it play a vital role in the healthy growth of our body which requires proper development of our muscles and bones.

(d) Fruits and vegetables are called protective foods.

Answer: Fruits and vegetables are called protective foods because they are rich in vitamins which help our body fight against diseases and keep us healthy.

Answer: Proteins help our body to stay healthy in the following ways:

  • By proper development of our muscles and bones.
  • They help our body to build new cells and repair the damaged ones, thus helping in healing cuts, bruises, fractures etc.

Question 9: Why do we need to eat food?

Answer:

  • All living things need food because it gives them the energy required to perform any activity or function.
  • Even when we are fast asleep, various functions such as our heartbeats that keep blood circulating, keep happening in our bodies. We therefore need energy all the time.
  • Furthermore, the energy from the food we eat is also needed by our bodies to grow and stay healthy.

Question 10: What could happen to a person who eats food substances that are rich in only one type of nutrients for many years?

Answer: The person will not get proper nutrition, will become weak and will not function properly. He may also fall sick.

Question 11: Suppose your friend has a fracture. Which foods would you suggest that he should include in his diet? Give reasons.

Answer: I would suggest my friend to include protein-rich food – eggs, milk, milk products, beans, pulses, fish, meat, etc. in his diet. This is because these foods help the body to build new cells and repair the damaged ones.

Calcium in milk and milk products will keep the bones strong.

Question 12: Explain the role of the following in our digestive process.

(a) Mouth

Answer: The process of digestion starts in the mouth. Chewing, grinding and crushing of food is done in mouth. Here, food is mixed with saliva which breaks down carbohydrates into simpler forms.

(b) Oesophagus

Answer: It is a long tube-like flexible structure which carries food from mouth to the stomach.

(c) Stomach

Answer: Stomach is a muscular bag in which food is churned and mixed with digestive juices. The juices help in breaking down proteins.

(d) Small intestine

Answer: Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are digested here. Absorption of vitamins and minerals also takes place here. The blood flowing in the network of blood capillaries in the wall of the small intestine absorb these nutrients and carries them to different parts of the body.

(e) Large Intestine

Answer: It absorbs water from the undigested food and forms semi-solid waste.

(f) Gall bladder

Answer: Bile stored in gall bladder enters the small intestine and helps in breaking down fats and oils into simpler, digestible forms.

Answer: Four healthy eating habits are:

  • Eat at regular intervals.
  • Always eat your meals in a pleasant environment.
  • Consume 8-10 glasses of water every day.
  • Chew food well before swallowing.
