Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead Summary

This poem is written by Alfred Lord Tennyson who concentrated more on war and war heroes. In this poem, the poet has depicted the feelings of a warrior’s wife who was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her husband who went to the battlefield. Instead of the arrival of the warrior, his dead body was brought home. The wife of the warrior was frozen with deep shock. She neither cried nor lost her consciousness. All her maidens were worried. They said within themselves, she must cry otherwise she would die.

Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead Questions & Answers

Question 1: How did the woman react when she saw the dead warrior?

Answer: When the woman saw her dead warrior, she neither swooned nor uttered a cry.

Question 2: Why were the maidens worried?

Answer: The maidens were worried and shocked at the total lack of reaction of the lady on seeing her dead husband. She neither swooned nor cried at the loss of the dead soldier – the terrible shock seemed to have numbed her. The maidens were worried that if she did not express her grief explicitly, she too would die.

Question 3: What efforts did the maidens take to make her weep for her dead warrior?

Answer: The maidens tried different things to bring tears to their friend’s eyes. They praised her husband a lot and spoke about his greatness as a friend and as a warrior. They called him a man worthy to be loved and respected. One maiden went near the dead body and took the face cloth/shroud from his body so that the maiden could see her husband’s dead face. None of these efforts brought a change to the maiden’s expression and she sat like a rock without showing any emotion.

Question 4: Who succeeded in making the woman cry?

Answer: A ninety years old nurse named Rose succeeded in making the woman cry.

Question 5: The maiden was totally unmoved despite all efforts from her friends. But she broke into tears the moment she looked at her child. Why do you think that happened?

Answer: The maiden was in a state of shock as her husband’s death at war was all too sudden. She broke into tears when she saw her child, as only then did reality set in. Only on seeing her child, she would have realised that life for her would be difficult as she would have to bring up a fatherless child, all on her own.

Question 6: Read the lines and answer the questions:

Stole a maiden from her place,
Lightly to the warrior stept,
Took the face-cloth from the face;
Yet she neither moved nor wept.

(a) Why did the maiden move away?

Answer: The maiden slowly moved away to go near the dead soldier’s body.

(b) What did she do? Why?

Answer: She slowly removed the face cloth of the dead warrior. She did that because she thought that would help her friend weep out her emotions.

(c) Did that serve the purpose?

Answer: No, nothing changed her. She neither moved nor wept.
