Question 1: Read the sentences and answer the questions.
“He might not like it. He’s all right, let’s go home. I just wanted to see where he was.”
(a) Who is being referred to in the sentences?
Answer: Atticus is being referred to in the sentences.
(b) What would he not like and why?
Answer: Atticus would not like to have Scout with him at that moment, as he was expecting some burly men who wanted to harm Tom Robinson.
(c) Who wanted to see where he was and why?
Answer: Scout wanted to see where was Atticus, as she was going back home with her elder brother Jem.
Question 2: Read the sentences and answer the questions.
“They won’t bother you any more.”
(a) Who said these words and to whom?
Answer: Atticus said these words to Tom Robinson.
(b) Who did ‘they’ refer to?
Answer: ‘They’ is being referred to the men who came in four cars and were asking for Tom Robinson.
(c) Where had they gone?
Answer: The men had gone back to where they came from.
Question 3: Name the narrator. Who are the narrator’s other two companions?
Answer: Scout is the narrator and her other two companions are her elder brother Jem and their friend Dill.
Question 4: Who is Atticus Finch? How can we tell that Atticus was anxious when he saw Scout, Jem and Dill?
Answer: Atticus Finch is a lawyer and father of eight-year-old Scout and her elder brother Jem. We can tell that Atticus was anxious as he had fear in his eyes as soon as he saw the kids (Scout, Jem and their friend Dill) in the presence of dangerous men who had come to threaten and harm Tom.
Question 5: What made the children think that Atticus seemed to be expecting the cars?
Answer: The body language of Atticus when the men arrived, made the children believe that he had been expecting the men. He did not seem surprised but was rather calm.
Question 6: Why did Jem disobey Atticus?
Answer: Jem observed those men threatening and misbehaving with his father (Atticus), hence he disobeyed Atticus by not going home as he wanted to stay there.
Question 7: How do we know that Atticus was relieved after the men left?
Answer: The expressions like leaning against the wall and wiping the face with handkerchief shows that Atticus was relieved after the men left.
