The Hobbit Questions & Answers

Question 1: Describe a hobbit and a hobbit’s house.

Answer: Hobbits are (or were) a little people, about half our height, have no beards, there is very little or no magic about them. They have fat stomachs, they dress in bright colours, don’t wear shoes as their feet have natural leathery soles and hairy tops, good natured faces, long brown fingers, they are plain & quiet folk.

Bilbo Baggins – a hobbit in this story was a rich and very well-to-do hobbit who had a very comfortable house also known as a hobbit hole. It had a perfectly round door painted in green with a shiny yellow brass knob in the middle. The door opened to a round tube-shaped hall which had panelled walls, tiled and carpeted floors, polished chairs and lots of pegs to hang hats and coats. The tunnel of the hobbit went on with lots of round doors opening to bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries, wardrobes, kitchens, dining rooms. The best rooms had windows looking over to the garden and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river.

Question 2: Why are the Bagginses considered ‘respectable’?

Answer: The Bagginses were considered ‘respectable’ as most of them were rich and also, they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.

Question 3: ‘…..got something a bit queer in his makeup…..’ What is the queer element in Bilbo?

Answer: The queer element referred here is an unusual quality of being adventurous which is not a usual characteristic of Baggins, however is there in the Tooks clan, which was noticed in Bilbo from his mother’s side.

Question 4: Why does Bilbo try to avoid Gandalf?

Answer: Gandalf was looking for someone to be a part of an adventure which he was planning. Bilbo was trying to avoid Gandalf as he was a Baggins, who are plain quiet folk and have no interest in adventures.

Question 5: Bilbo did not invite the dwarves to tea, but they started arriving one after the other. Why do you think this happened?

Answer: Gandalf had visited Bilbo a day before and discussed about and adventure he was planning to which Bilbo showed no interest and avoided him. Taking this as an opportunity, Gandalf might have sent dwarves to Bilbo’s place so that they can together persuade Bilbo to company them on the adventure Gandalf had planned.
