Question 1: How did Tine spent her time in the Mishmi Hills?

Answer: Tine spent her childhood days in the Mishmi Hills. She used to climb trees, run through the jungle, spend long days lying under the sun and hearing the wonderful sounds from the mountains.

Question 2: Why was Tine unhappy in Roing?

Answer: There was no mountain in Roing. Tine could not hear the wonderful call from the distant mountains. She missed the sound and wanted to return to the mountains again. So, she was sad in Roing.

Question 3: What did Tine do immediately after finishing school? Why?

Answer: Immediately after finishing the school, Tine applied to be a porter for army expeditions in the mountains as this would help her return to the mountains she missed.

Question 4: What was the name of the film on the first climb of Everest? How it change Tine Mena’s life?

Answer: ‘The Race for Everest’ was the name of the film on the first climb of Everest. Tine got to know the name of the distant, mountain and heard the “whooshoo” sound due to which climbing Everest become her dream.

Question 5: Where did Tine meet Dr. Meitei? How did he help her?

Answer: Tine met Dr. Meitei on one of her expeditions as a coordinator. Dr. Meitei recognized Tine’s talent, became her mentor and helped her to train as a mountain climber.

Question 6: Why did Tine go to the Everest base camp in Nepal? What did she do there?

Answer: Tine dreamt of climbing Mount Everest. She went to the Everest base camp to get used to the harsh weather before she actually began climbing the mountain.

Answer: The storm blew Tine and Cherring’s tent and supplies away when they were about to take rest in the final camp. They had to borrow a tent where they spent the night.

(b) How did the strong wind affect their journey?

Answer: When Tine and Cherring started climbing the mountain, the next day, the wind kept growing stronger. The wind was so strong that walking ahead became very difficult and climbing the mountain seemed to have become almost impossible. For every step they took, they reeled back one step.

Answer: Tine became the first woman from Northeast India to climb Mount Everest.

Answer: Tine was a gifted mountain climber. Had she not met Dr. Meitei, she would possibly never have received training to become skilled at mountain climbing. Cherring Sherpa, who accompanied her to the top of Mount Everest also supported her and helped her to brave the weather conditions and continue to climb to the top.

Question 9: When did Tine summit the Mount Everest and how her efforts were rewarded?

Answer: Tine summited the Mount Everest on 9th May, 2011 at 10:45 a.m. She became the first woman from the North East of India to have done so.
