(c) Which international body was formed after World War I to promote peace and cooperation in the world?

Answer: The League of Nations was formed immediately after World War I to promote peace and cooperation in the world.

(d) Name the specialized agency of the UN that works towards conserving cultural heritage sites.

Answer: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is the specialized agency of the UN that works towards conserving cultural heritage sites.

Question 3: What are the aims of the United Nations?

Answer: The aims of the United Nations are:
i. To maintain international peace and security.
ii. To foster worldwide cooperation to solve international, economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problem.
iii. To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principles of equal rights and self-determination of people.
iv. To respect and promote human rights.
v. To serve as centre where nations can coordinate their actions and activities towards these various ends.

Question 4: State the six principal organs of UN and their functions.

Answer: The six principal organs of UN and their functions are:

1. The General Assembly

It is the biggest organ of the United Nations due to its composition. All member states of the United Nations send their representatives to the General Assembly. The work of the United Nations throughout the year depends to a great extent on the instructions given by the General Assembly.

2. The Security Council

This is the most effective organ of the United Nations. The Security Council deals primarily with the question of war and peace in order to maintain peace and security.

3. The International Court of Justice

This is the main judicial branch of the United Nations. It consists of 15 judges elected for a nine-year terms by both the General Assembly and Security Council.

4. The Trusteeship Council

The Trusteeship Council was set up immediately after the Second World War. It ensured administration and development of those areas of the world, which were not independent or had been destroyed as a result of the war.

5. The Economic and Social Council

The Economic and Social Council consists of 54 members who are elected by the General Assembly for a period of three years. It mainly co-ordinates between the United Nations and the specialized agencies.

6. The Secretariat

The Secretariat is the principal administrative department of the United Nations headed by the Secretary General who is appointed for a five-year term by both the General Assembly and the Security Council. It helps in peacekeeping operations and mediate international disputes.

Question 5: Why was United Nations formed?

Answer: The failure of the League of Nations to prevent ‘World War II’ compelled the nations of the world to come together once again to find ways of preventing wars in the future. With all efforts to establish international peace and development, to promote co-operation in solving international problems, the United Nations was formed in the year 1945 after the Second World War.

Question 6: Discuss the role of India in the United Nations.

Answer: India is one of the founder members of the United Nations. India has always supported the United Nations in its various activities against racial discrimination and the freedom of colonies. She has been part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in countries such as Congo.

Answer: The permanent members of the Security Council hold the most important power called veto power meaning the right to disagree. A negative vote – a veto – by a permanent member prevents the adoption of a proposal. USA, UK, Russia, France and China are the permanent members of the Security Council and they have this veto power.

Answer: Peace with justice is a way which promotes nonviolent solutions to everyday problems and so contributes to civil society. Peace with justice sets standards for the security of children and for primary health care. It promotes an end to violence and poverty.
