A Pen and A Sunset Questions & Answers
Question 1: How do you react to things you lose? Think and answer.
Answer: I feel my favourite things always remind me of the people who gave them to me or the occasions I got them on. As they remind me of the love and regard of others for me, I feel strongly about losing such things.
Question 2: Do you agree with Grandpa’s explanation that it is the love that is attached to a particular thing that make it lucky? Why?
Answer: I agree with Grandpa’s explanation. It is our luck to have love and warmth from others, so we attach luck to the things they give us and think of them as lucky.
Question 3: Describe Tarini’s pen. Where had she kept it?
Answer: Tarini’s pen was a golden and red-coloured pen gifted to her by her parents on her birthday. She had kept it in her bag.
Question 4: How did Grandpa convince Tarini? Fill in the blanks to complete the answer.
Answer: The pen you lost was your lucky pen because it reminded you of the love. Now the pen has gone, but the truth of your parents’ love for you remains unchanged! Just as when the rainwater goes away the truth of the sun does not change.
Question 5: Why did Tarini feel that she would do badly in her exams?
Answer: Tarini felt so because she had lost her lucky pen. It was a special pen gifted by her parents and she believed that it always brought good luck to her.
Question 6: Why do you think Grandpa ‘shuffled slowly’ across to the kitchen?
Answer: Grandpa ‘shuffled slowly’ across to the kitchen to ask Tarini’s mother to send her to the terrace. He did not want Tarini to guess that she had been purposely called to the terrace for discussion with grandpa but just on the pretext of getting some fresh air.
Question 7: Why did Tarini find Grandpa’s Idea funny?
Answer: Tarini found Grandpa’s idea funny as he compared Tarini’s lost pen to the disappearance of rainwater and truth of unchanging love of her parents to truth of existence of the sun.
Question 8: Discuss why Grandpa told Tarini’s mother, “exactly what I had tell you once, when you were eleven.”
Answer: When Tarini’s mother was a little girl, she lost heart as something that she considered dear went missing. Then, grandpa cheered her up using the same metaphorical example. Wisdom and fun in his words enlivened her spirits and dispelled gloom that had descended in her heart.
