Question 1: What happened when Mary Poppins said ‘North’?
Answer: The letters on the compass that Mary Poppins held in her hand began to turn rapidly around the arrow. All of a sudden, the park disappeared and was replaced by a bitterly cold field of ice with huge boulders of blue ice and snow and an icy wind.
Question 2: Where did Michael and Jane see a polar bear? How did they react?
Answer: Michael and Jane saw a Polar Bear in a field of ice in the North Pole. They were very afraid and began to think whether Polar Bears attacked and ate children.
Question 3: Where did the children see the Hyacinth Macaw? What did he offer them?
Answer: The children saw the Hyacinth Macaw in a warm, leafy jungle in the South. The Macaw offered them bananas to eat.
Question 4: Describe the place where the travellers found themselves when Mary Poppins said ‘East’.
Answer: When Mary Poppins said ‘East’, the children found themselves in a grassy clearing surrounded by bamboo trees. A gentle breeze passed through the trees and the leaves rustled with a paper-like sound.
Question 5: In which part of the world did the travellers meet the dolphin? How did she greet them?
Answer: The travellers met the Dolphin in the West. The Dolphin, Amelia, greeted them warmly, by blowing some sand from her nose and asking if they wanted to have some seaweed.
Question 6: What did the Dolphin plan for their next meeting? Did the visitors like the idea? How do you know?
Answer: The Dolphin wanted the travellers to stay for tea the next time they arrived. She also wanted them to sit on a rock and sing a song to the moon. Mary Poppins and the children loved the idea. So, Mary Poppins said that it would be a lovely experience. The children had never sat on a rock and sung to the moon.
Question 7: Who said these words to whom? What was happening when he or she said it?
1. Let me get you a little snack.
Answer: The Polar Bear said this to the children. The children, who were only dressed for a walk to the park, were shivering in the biting cold of the North Pole. They were also afraid that the Polar Bear would attack and eat them. Instead, the Polar Bear welcomed them to the North Pole and offered to get them something to eat to make them comfortable.
2. You’ll be sorry you missed us.
Answer: Mary Poppins said this to the Panda. When the travellers arrived in the bamboo forest, the Panda was asleep. He did not want to wake up as he was very sleepy and asked his guests to leave because he was taking his usual afternoon nap. Mary Poppins wanted to wake him up so that they could meet briefly before leaving for their next destination.
3. I’ll have to make a home for you all.
Answer: The Panda said this to Mary Poppins. When he saw his visitors, he thought that they were going to stay. As he knew that his own hut was too small, he wanted to build a bigger hut for them to stay in.
4. Tickle me gently behind the ears. That always send me to sleep.
Answer: The Panda said this to the children. Mary Poppins told him that they were going to leave very soon, so the Panda wanted to go back to sleep.
5. But we have to be home in half a minute.
Answer: Mary Poppins said this to Amelia, the Dolphin. Amelia was inviting them to have some seaweed with her.
6. We’ll all sit together on a rock and sing a song to the moon.
Answer: Amelia, the Dolphin, said this to the children and Mary Poppins. She was disappointed that Mary Poppins was not going to stay for tea and invited them to visit her again.
7. Herring! Herring! Herring!
Answer: Michael was cheering the herring that Mary Poppins tossed back into the sea. He had seen Amelia swim after it, and thought that the Dolphin and the herring were racing against each other.
