Question 1: Who were Abou and Nouzhatoul?

Answer: Abou was a witty person. He was the Caliph’s favourite. Nouzhatoul was his wife.

Question 2: Why did Abou get angry with Nouzhatoul?

Answer: He got angry because Nouzhatoul had served him very poor breakfast.

Question 3: How did Abou spend his money?

Answer: Abou spent his money in feasting and enjoying with his friends.

Question 4: Why did Abou not expect anything from his friends?

Answer: Abou knew that all friends are fair-weather friends. So, he didn’t expect anything from them.

Answer: The Caliph and the Begum saw both Abou and his wife lying ‘dead’. The Caliph said it was Abou’s wife that had died first. The Begum said it was Abou that had died first. Thus, a fresh dispute arose between the two.

Answer: Once Abou ran short of money. He thought of a plan to get money from the Caliph. He and his wife decided to play as being dead. Abou went to the Caliph. He told him that his wife had died. He got from Caliph money for his wife’s funeral. Similarly. Abou’s wife went to the Princess. She told her that Abou had died. She, too, got money from the Princess for Abou’s funeral. Later, when the Caliph met the Princess, there arose a dispute between them. The Caliph said that Abou’s wife had died. The Princess said that it was Abou who had died. Both of them decided to go to Abou Hassan’s house to know the truth.

Answer: The Caliph had been told that Abou’s wife had died. But the Begum had been told that Abou had died. So, both the Caliph and the Begum came to Abou’s house. They wanted to find out the truth. When Abou saw them coming, he asked his wife to lie down. Abou, too, lay down in his bed. Both of them pretended to be dead. Now, a fresh controversy began. The Caliph said that it was Abou’s wife who had died first. The Begum said that Abou had died first. Each of them offered a reward to any man who could tell the fact. Abou at once sprang out of his bed. He said that he had died first. Abou’s wife, too, got up. The Caliph was greatly surprised. Abou begged the Caliph to forgive him. He said that his poverty had driven him to play the game. The Caliph was pleased to see that both Abou and his wife were alive. He gave Abou the reward that he had promised.

Answer: Abou Hassan was a poor man. But he was a happy-go-lucky fellow. He was the favourite of the Caliph. The Caliph often helped him with money and gold. Abou spent all his money in entertaining his friends. So, he was often at the point of starvation. His friends left him as soon as his purse was empty. His wife became angry with him for squandering his money. But Abou said that money was meant to be enjoyed and shared. Abou was very witty. He had an Inventive mind. Once he ran short of money. He thought of a novel plan to get money from the Caliph. He sent his wife to the Begum. He himself went to the Caliph. Both of them got money for each other’s funeral. When the Caliph came to know of Abou’s game, he was not angry with him. He was rather pleased to see Abou and his wife alive. He gave some gold as a reward for his wit and intelligence.
