Question 1: Who was Birbal?

Answer: Birbal was a minister in the court of Akbar.

Question 2: What did the town crier announce?

Answer: The town crier announced an award for the man who would stand in the ice-cold water of the river the whole night.

Question 3: What challenge did Akbar give?

Answer: The challenge was to stand in the ice-cold water of the river for the whole night, and anyone who succeeded would be awarded.

Question 4: Why did Denu’s wife not want him to accept the challenge?

Answer: Denu’s wife did not want Denu to accept the challenge because the water of the river was extremely cold. It was a big risk to take.

Question 5: Why did Akbar not reward Denu at first?

Answer: A courtier said that he thought that the lights from the palace kept Denu warm all through the night and the challenge was not completed in the real sense. So he advised Akbar not to reward the washerman.

When Akbar went to see why was Birbal was taking so long he saw that he was cooking food in a pot hung high above a fire. When Akbar questions this, Birbal explains that if lights from the palace can keep the washerman warm, then his fire would cook food in the pot. Akbar at once realized his mistake.
