Question 1: Number these events ¡n the correct order.

Question 2: Why did Crusoe sleep on a tree?
Answer: Crusoe worried that there might be wild animals and believed that the top of a tall tree would keep him safe. So, he went to sleep on a tree.
Question 3: Why did Crusoe swim out to the ship?
Answer: Crusoe swam out to the ship because he wanted to get some things from it – food, tools, weapons and anything else that he could use.
Question 4: How did Crusoe make a raft?
Answer: Crusoe found rope, large planks and spare topmasts on the ship. He tied them with rope and threw them into the sea. Then, he went down and tied four of them together at both ends in the form of a raft. Then, he laid two or three short pieces of plank upon them crossways. He cut a topmast into three using a saw and added them to the raft.

Answer: Crusoe didn’t take all the clothes he found on the ship because he needed other things more, such as tools and weapons.

Answer: He became sad because he was alone and in a strange place. He was wet, cold and had no dry clothes or any food. He also worried that there might be wild animals there.

Answer: He thought so because he had to quickly get some essential things from the ship and get back to shore. He wasn’t sure how long the ship would stay in place because of the tide.

Question 8: Why was the carpenter’s chest more valuable to Crusoe than a ship full of gold?
Answer: A ship full of gold would not have helped Crusoe in any way because he was shipwrecked alone on an island. But the carpenter’s chest, with a wide variety of tools to build almost anything, would help Crusoe greatly. He could build a shelter, furniture, more weapons and other useful things using them and the wood he found on the ship.
