Be Honest At All Times Questions & Answers
Question 1: Each brother was sure that his sight was better than that of his brothers. Is this True or False? How do you know?
Answer: False. Each brother was sure that they were short sighted. I know this because that’s why each of them went to the caretaker at the school one by one and asked him to tell them what was inscribed on the tablet.
Question 2: In what way did the brothers agree to test their sight?
Answer: The three brothers agreed to test their sight with a simple test of reading. The school nearby was about to put a tablet, with a saying inscribed near the doorway. The brothers had decided that they would all go to the school the next morning and read the inscription on the tablet one by one. The one who would be able to read the inscription with the least strain would be the one to handle their money.
Question 3: Why did the eldest brother think he was clever?
Answer: The eldest brother was the one who had suggested the idea of taking a vision test for all the brothers to decide who amongst them would be taking the charge of their money. The test was to be held the next morning. But at night, when he thought that his brothers had slept, he went to the school and asked the caretaker to tell him what was inscribed on the table. Doing this, he thought that he had been clever enough to fool his two brothers.
Question 4: How many things were inscribed on the tablet?
Answer: There were three things inscribed on the tablet. They were the following:
1. A quotation by Confucius which said, “Be Honest at all times”.
2. A flowery border all around the inscription for decoration and,
3. The name of the donor, Wang Lee.
Question 5: ‘There’s a flowery border all around the tablet.’
(a) Who said this?
Answer: This statement was made by the second brother.
(b) When did he say this?
Answer: He said this soon after the eldest brother told what was inscribed on the tablet as per the information he had. But the second brother triumphantly spoke that he could also see the flowery decoration all around the tablet besides the saying.
(c) To whom did he say this?
Answer: The second brother meant to refer to both the eldest as well as the youngest brother when he had spoken these lines.
Question 6: How do you think the brothers felt when each one was caught lying?
Answer: I feel, that the brothers must have felt both angry with each other because each of them were dishonest with the other two, as well as ashamed of themselves, when they were all caught lying.
Question 7: Why did the youngest brother want to take charge of the money?
Answer: He felt that people had started taking advantage of the elder brother’s poor sight & vision. He thought that his sight was much better and he can take charge of the money better than his brother.
