Question 1: Hanna Chaplin lived for her two sons and did everything she could to keep them happy. Do you agree?

Answer: Yes, she lived for, and did everything for her sons. She sang on the stage despite her fear. She danced and sang for her sons, took them to the beach, treated them to cakes and ice cream, and narrated stories to them.

Question 2: Why was Hannah afraid to perform at the music halls? In what way did her worst fear come true one evening?

Answer: The unruly crowd made her afraid. One evening, when her voice cracked, the crowd made catcalls and began to laugh.

Question 3: Whose idea was it to make Charlie take his mother’s place on stage? How did this idea change Charlie’s and his mother’s life?

Answer: It was the stage manager’s idea to make Charlie take her place. Charlie realised his talent and passion for entertaining people on this night. His mother never performed on stage again.

Question 4: Study Charlie’s first performance on stage. What were the signs during his performance that he had the qualities of an extraordinary comedian?

Answer: Charlie sang, danced, and did several imitations including that of his mother. There was laughter and cheers and applause during his performance.

Question 5: How did Hannah manage ‘to bring some magic’ into the lives of Charlie and Sydney? What does this tell you about her?

Answer: She sang, danced, and told wonderful stories. She was a gifted and imaginative person, inclined towards the arts. She loved her sons immensely.

Question 6: How can we tell that Hannah and the boys lived in poverty?

Answer: We know they lived in poverty because there wasn’t enough money even for basic needs. Hannah was forced to sing in the music halls of London, despite her fears, to earn some money. She sewed clothes for people. The children sometimes had to go to the workhouse.

Question 7: Why do you think Charlie was heart-broken when his mother was admitted to a mental institution?

Answer: Charlie was heartbroken because he loved her a lot, and she meant so much to him.

Question 8: Which of Hannah’s qualities do you think Charlie inherited?

Answer: Charlie inherited her singing talent, her acting skills, and her ability to bring magic into other people’s world.
