Answer: As a mermaid, Amanda imagines a very peaceful life where she would be surrounded by a calm sea with emerald green water and she would glide gleefully in this placid sea.

Answer: “Languid, emerald sea” refers to a calm sea with emerald green water that forms a peaceful atmosphere where Amanda need not to suffer from the constant chiding by her mother.

Answer: As an orphan, Amanda would roam about bare-footed in the streets freely with no parent to scold her for walking in the dusty path.

Answer: With the constant dominating commands of her mother, Amanda feels fed up and suffocated because she has no freedom to exercise her own sweet will. That is why she craves for liberty and regards silence to be ‘golden’ and freedom to be ‘sweet’.
