Darwin Diaries Questions & Answers
Question 1: Read the line and answer the questions:
1. The barrenness of the land is deceptive.
(a) Which land does James refer to?
Answer: The land which James refers to is the Chatham Island.
(b) Why did he think the land is barren?
Answer: James thought that the land was barren because of its topography. The Beach had a dark colour because of the lava, the land was uneven and mangled. The only vegetation was the tiny brushwood scorched by the sun. Moreover, the land was full of craters and streaming vents.
(c) Why was the barrenness of the land deceptive?
Answer: The barrenness of the land was deceptive because in spite of its rough, uneven and jagged landscape and limited vegetation, the sea around the island was full of fish, sharks and turtles.
2. Mr Darwin had them all sketched.
(a) What all did Mr Darwin have sketched?
Answer: Mr. Darwin had sketched the different kinds of birds called finches.
(b) What did Mr Darwin do with the sketches?
Answer: Mr Darwin studied all the sketches thoroughly and concluded how properties of their beaks were suited to their respective diets.
(c) Describe the finches on James Island?
Answer: The finches on James Island have different habitats and food habits. While some birds stay on grounds, others live on trees. Some feed on insects, while the others live on leaves and cacti. Some of the birds have long, pointy beaks and some have short and heavy ones.
Question 2: The creatures of the Galapagos Islands are unaccustomed to human company. Explain this statement with reference to the birds, the tortoises and the finches.
Answer: The creatures of the Galapagos Islands are unaccustomed to human company.
The birds were hopping very close to the narrator and his team, ignoring the pebbles that were being thrown at them.
As the writer and his members approached towards the tortoises, one was eating a cactus and the other gave a grumpy hiss and walked away.
The Finches were doing their own activities without noticing the writer and his members. These finches with their wide variety generated the interest of Mr Darwin. He had all of the finches sketched easily and observed them closely without any hindrance.
Question 3: According to Darwin, which hereditary instinct have the iguanas failed to develop? How does he prove this on Chatham and Albemarle Islands?
Answer: According to Darwin, the hereditary instinct which the Iguanas have failed to develop on these islands is the fear of human beings. On Chatham Island, Darwin came across the sea-going Iguana. The iguana did not react when it was prodded and poked. Even when, Darwin took it and flung it into a rock pool, the iguana promptly came back to its original place. Darwin repeated the process a few times and every time, the iguana came back as it saw the side of the rock pool as a safe refuge.
The land iguana on Albemarle Island, just like its cousin on Chatham Island was not used to the company of humans. Mr Darwin saw one such iguana almost burying Itself in a burrow and after going halfway in, pulled its tail in. Then, it peeped out of the burrow to look at what the others around it were up to.
Question 4: Why does call the Galapagos Islands the land that time forgot?
Answer: Darwin calls the Galapagos Islands, the land that time forgot because the archipelago of the islands is located far away from human civilization. Here, time stood still and nothing about the Islands has changed. Here, nature is in a different format altogether with limited vegetation that supports numerous animal species. Animals like the sea and land going iguanas, the Galapagos tortoise, and the finches were not all affected by the way the team from HMS Beagle observed them and tried to get their attention. Here, modern civilisation has not been able to establish its control over the land and its inhabitants. Being far away and completely aloof from the world of Mr Darwin and the crew of HMS Beagle, the Galapagos Islands with its Islands, animaIs and vegetation is a world of its own.
