- The State applies Gandhian philosophy to the Directive principles of State policy in the following ways.
- The State shall take steps to organize village Panchayats and give them enough power to manage their own affairs and function as units of self-government.
- The State shall try and promote the growth of cottage industries in rural areas.
- The State shall protect the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of society, especially, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
- The State shall take steps to prohibit the use of intoxicating drinks and drugs that are detrimental to one’s health.

Answer: India has made considerable progress in implementing some of the principles of the Directive Principles:
- Right to Education Act, 2009 ensures free and compulsory education to children between 6-14 years of age.
- Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been granted reservations in schools, colleges, the Parliament and the State Legislature as well.
- The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 grants equal wages to men and women for equal work. The Minimum Wages Act ensures a just amount of wage to the workers.
- The Judiciary has been separated from the Executive.
- Village Panchayats have been set up and the Panchayati Raj system has been formalized by the Indian Constitution.
- Cottage industries have been established in the rural areas.

Answer: The three Directive Principles that aim to promote socio-economic equality are:
- The State shall provide adequate means of livelihood for both men and women; it should provide equal pay for equal work for men and women.
- The State shall make provisions for securing the right to work, to education and to seek public assistance in cases of sickness, old age and unemployment.
- The State shall distribute wealth in a way that it does not concentrate in the hands of a few.
