Question 1: Who was Eklavya? What was troubling him?

Answer: Eklavya was a mere tribal boy, related to shudra caste. A desire to become Drona’s disciple was troubling him.

Question 2: Who was Dronacharya? How was his Gurukul?

Answer: Dronacharya was a guru of Pandavas, who taught them the art of archery. Drona’s Gurukul was a sacred place for getting education and it was a very peaceful place. The Gurukul consisted of a group of huts surrounded by trees and an archery yard where the disciples used to practise to shoot arrows with their bows and arrows.

Question 3: Why did Drona refuse to teach Eklavya? Was he right in doing so?

Answer: Drona refused to teach Eklavya because Eklavya belonged to a Shudra family which was considered as a low caste according to the Vedic Caste System while Drona himself was a Brahmin, the highest caste in the kingdom. He was not right in doing so because everyone is equal in each and every quality.

Question 4: What did Eklavya do to learn archery? What things made him the extraordinary archer?

Answer: Eklavya made a statue of Drona, placed it on cleared top in the forest and practised the art of archery before it. He had the faith that if he would practice before his Guru, he would become an able archer. His own firm determination, continuous practice and belief made him the extra-ordinary archer.

Question 5: How did Eklavya stop the dog from barking?

Answer: Eklavya shot seven arrows at speed into dog’s mouth without hurting it thereby stopping him from barking.

Question 6: What promise did Drona make with Arjuna? What did he do to keep his promise?

Answer: Drona promised Arjuna that he would make Arjuna the best archer in the world. He asked for Eklavya’s right hand thumb as his guru-dakshina to keep his promise with Arjuna.

Question 7: Why was Eklavya shocked? What did he do then?

Answer: Eklavya was shocked when guru Drona accepted him as his disciple. He at once cut off his right hand thumb happily and served it to guru Drona.

Question 8: What blessing did Eklavya get from Drona?

Answer: Drona blessed Eklavya that he would be remembered forever for his loyalty to his guru.

Question 9: Should Dronacharya refuse to teach Eklavya because of low class holder?

Answer: Dronacharya should not have refused to teach Eklavya because of low class holder. This is because God has made everybody as equal and no discrimination should be made on the basis of the caste, creed, colour or gender.

Question 10: How did Eklavya become a great archer as only statues can’t teach?

Answer: It is true that statues cannot teach. It was only Eklavya’s belief that without a guru, he could not learn an art of archery. His belief in the statue, firm determination, continuous practice and positive attitude made him a great archer.

Question 11: Was Drona right in asking for guru-dakshina?

Answer: Drona was not right in asking for guru-dakshina at all because statues don’t teach. But all these are the views of modern time. In those days, the value of guru was the most and believing in a statue made guru Drona more respected all over. This made the saying true that believing in a stone can also do magic.

Question 12: Was Eklavya right in paying guru-dakshina?

Answer: If Eklavya thought guru Drona as his guru and believed that he learnt an art of archery because of guru Drona’s blessings then, he was right in paying for guru-dakshina.

Question 13: Despite his handicap, Eklavya became a greater archer. How?

Answer: Despite his handicap, Eklavya became a great archer because he was dedicated to do anything. Disabilities or problems can’t be a hindrance in anyone’s life, if he is determined.

1. “Why are you not interested in hunting?”

Answer: Eklavya’s father said this to Eklavya.

2. “I want to become a disciple of the great Dronacharya?”

Answer: Eklavya said this to his father.

3. “I cannot teach a Shudra boy.”

Answer: Drona said this to Eklavya.

4. “God has given knowledge to all.”

Answer: Eklavya said this to himself.

5. “A common hunter has become better than me!”

Answer: Arjuna said this to Drona.

6. “Gurudev used to say he would make Arjuna the best archer in the whole world.”

Answer: Other Disciples said this to Drona.

7. “I’ll be the happiest person on the Earth to serve you?”

Answer: Eklavya said this to Drona.

Question 15: Read the lines and answer the questions:

1. “I am as strong and enthusiastic as Drona’s princes and disciples. If I practise the art everyday, I can surely become an archer.”

(a) Whose views are these?

Answer: These are the views of Eklavya.

(b) What did ‘he’ want?

Answer: He wanted to become an archer.

(c) Was ‘he’ right in saying so?

Answer: Yes, he was right in saying so. He practised everyday with great determination and became a great archer.

(d) Did ‘he’ prove himself?

Answer: Yes, he proved himself. He became a great archer despite his handicap.

2. “His renown spreads far and wide. When Drona comes to know this, he blesses the boy silently and begs for divine forgiveness.”

(a) Whose renown spread far and wide? Why?

Answer: Eklavya’s renown spread far and wide because he became a better archer than he was ever before, even after being handicap.

(b) Why did Drona bless the boy silently?

Answer: Drona blessed the boy silently because he accepted him as his disciple afterwards and became happy at his great deeds.

(c) Why did he beg for divine forgiveness?

Answer: He begged for divine forgiveness because he asked for Eklavya’s right hand thumb as guru-dakshina to keep his promise with Arjuna.
