Question 5: Were the other children kind to Harry and his sister? How do you know?

Answer: No, they were not kind to Harry and his sister. They jeered and made up an unkind rhyme to tease Harry. ‘Harry push her, push her now! Harry push the crazy cow!’ are the lines which illustrate this.

Question 6: What tells you that Harry’s sister was physically challenged?

Answer: As Harry’s sister was sitting on the wheel-chair all the time and needed someone to push her around tells us that she was physically challenged.

Question 7: Why could Harry never have a normal childhood?

Answer: Harry did not have a normal childhood as he could never play and run about freely like children of his age as he was responsible for looking after his sister who was wheelchair-bound. He was also deprived of the normal relationship one has with a brother or sister since his sister was mentally challenged and barely spoke a word.

Question 8: What were the things that Harry missed because of self-imposed duty on himself?

Answer: Because of self-imposed duty on himself, Harry missed his holidays, the company of friends and everything connected with childhood.

Question 9: Harry never had a childhood like me’. Who is ‘me’ here?

Answer: ‘Me’ is the poet.

Question 10: Does the poet appreciate Harry’s task? How do you know?

Answer: Yes, he appreciates Harry’s task. We realize it through his tone and attitude.

Question 11: What tells you that the girl is physically as well as mentally challenged?

Answer: The lines that tell us that Harry’s sister is physically challenged are:
“Harry pushed her without a care; He pushed his sister in her wheelchair.”

The lines that tell us that Harry’s sister is mentally challenged are:
”she smiled strangely! And never said a word.”

Question 12: What do you think of Harry?

Answer: I think Harry is very sincere, dedicated and caring brother who has sacrificed a normal life of playing, and other activities of childhood to bring cheer into the life of his sister by steering her around.

Question 13: ‘It was so absurd’. What was ‘absurd’?

Answer: Harry pushing his sister for years was absurd. The absurdity is the reverse age gradient between the two. Normally, one expects this kind of caring from an elder sibling for a younger one, and not vice versa. His sister was much older than him. That a younger child was helping a sibling eleven years older than him was absurd to others.

Question 14: Why the word ‘pushed’ has been used so many times in the poem?

Answer: The word pushed has been used so many times because it shows that Harry pushed her in a happy or playful manner to help her move. Initially the repetition of the word ‘pushed’, especially in the expression ‘pushed her around’, gives a different feeling (the verbal phrase ‘push [someone] around’ means to bully someone). As the poem progresses, the real meaning of the word ‘push’ unravels, and the repetition of the word echoes Harry’s care and devotion. The poet has tried to emphasize the fact that the young boy, relentlessly, did his duty of pushing his sister around in her wheelchair.
