Question 1: How did the journalist challenge Houdini?
Answer: From one of his travels, the journalist had brought a handcuff with a unique lock which was apparently impossible to unlock. He brought the handcuff to one of the Houdini’s shows. When Houdini challenged his audience to successfully handcuff him, the journalist stepped in. He shook hands with the ‘Handcuff King’, placed the handcuffs on Houdini’s wrists and snapped them shut. Then, he turned the key six times, locking it as firmly as possible.
Question 2: Why was Houdini called the ‘handcuff king’ and the ‘mysteriarch’?
Answer: Houdini was called the ‘handcuff king’ because he was known to escape out of any kind of lock or handcuff. He was nicknamed ‘Mysteriarch’ because he was the master of mysteries.
Question 3: Why did the journalist give Houdini a cushion?
Answer: Houdini’s knees were hurting because the challenge took longer than expected. Understanding his uncomfortable state, the journalist gave Houdini a cushion to rest his knees.
Question 4: Why did Houdini cry at the end of the challenge?
Answer: Houdini cried at the end of the challenge because it had been an extremely difficult and stressful task. He had taken a very long time and he almost thought he would not be able to escape. The audienceoutside was very hopeful for him and he felt the pressure of not wanting to disappoint them.

Answer: Houdini wanted to take his cuffs so that he could remove his coat.
(b) Why did the journalist refuse to take them off?
Answer: The journalist refused to take them off because he thought Houdini wanted to see the lock opened, so he could watch the technique of unlocking it, which would later help him to break free out of it.
(c) What was the solution Houdini found?
Answer: Houdini took a pen knife from his pocket, flipped his jacket over his head and cut it to pieces.
