Question 1: What was Mrs Becky’s advice to Mrs David?

Answer: Mrs Becky advised her to be the boss of her own family.

Question 2: What did Mrs Becky think about the duty of husbands, sons and daughters?

Answer: Mrs Becky said that husbands, sons and daughters should be taking notice of wives and mothers. They should not give them orders and treat them like dirt.

Question 3: How did Mrs Becky offer to help Mrs David to set her family right?

Answer: Mrs Becky knew some magic by which she could change personalities with Mrs David. Mrs Becky would then look like Mrs David and vice versa. Mrs Becky thus offered to set Mrs David’s family right for her.

Question 4: What happened to Mrs David after the change of personalities?

Answer: Mrs David now became bold and started behaving like Mrs Becky. She snatched the cigarette from Mrs Becky’s mouth and put it in her own mouth.

Answer: Kitty was Mrs David’s daughter. She was surprised to see her mother smoking a cigarette.

Answer: Luke was annoyed to see that his mother had not got any tea ready for him. She had not mended his shirt also. She said that she didn’t like mending.

Answer: Mrs David retorted that she, too, had done her eight hours.

Answer: John was Mrs David’s husband. People at the club called him pot-bellied John.

Answer: John said there was going to be a special party at the club that night. That was why, he did not want to have evening tea. But very strangely, he became angry when his wife said she hadn’t made any tea for him.

Answer: Charlie was Kitty’s boyfriend. Mrs David called him a pug-nosed stupid fellow.

Answer: Luke called Mrs Becky a silly, old hog. His mother reacted to this very angrily. She said that Mrs Becky had a lot more sense than Luke had.

Question 13: Why did Mrs Becky request Mrs David to change back? Who were these two ladies actually?

Answer: Mrs Becky was, in fact, Mrs David in Mrs Becky’s body. She saw how miserable her husband and children were feeling. She could stand it no longer. So she requested Mrs David (In fact Mrs Becky) to change back.

Question 14: What was Mrs Becky’s final advice to Mrs David?

Answer: Mrs Becky advised Mrs David to keep firm or else all their efforts would be wasted.

Question 15: What change do you notice in John, Kitty and Luke at the end of the play?

Answer: All three look completely harnessed at the end of the play. They are no longer thoughtless or overbearing in their behaviour. They speak very politely and agree to do whatever their mother wants them to do. Luke and Kitty agree to get supper ready while their mom and dad are having a talk.

Question 16: John, Kitty and Luke were all ungrateful. How?

Answer: John, Kitty and Luke were all thoroughly ungrateful. Each one was worried about himself or herself only. John didn’t want tea, yet he got angry with his wife for not having made any tea for him. Kitty wanted her mother to iron her dress because she was going out to meet her boyfriend. Luke said he was tired after his eight-hour day. But none of them ever thought of the poor mother’s fate. Everybody ordered her about as if she was their servant. Really, they were all very ungrateful.

Question 17: How did Mrs Becky help Mrs David to be the boss of her family?

Answer: Mrs Becky was Mrs David’s neighbour. She offered to help Mrs David in setting her family right. She knew some magic, and worked a change of personality with Mrs David. Now, she looked as if she were Mrs David, and vice versa. She sent Mrs David to her own house and herself stayed in Mrs David’s house. When Kitty, Luke and John came in, she dealt with them severely. She made them realize how unfeeling and selfish they were. All three of them became thoroughly harnessed. Thus, Mrs Becky helped Mrs David to be the boss of her family.

Question 18: ‘Husbands, sons, daughters should be taking notice of wives and mothers, not giving them orders and treating them like dirt.’ What do you think about it?

Answer: The problem of wives and mothers is a universal problem. Husbands, sons and daughters treat them like dirt. They order them about as if they were nothing more than servants in the house. They go out to enjoy themselves with their friends. They leave the poor mothers and wives at home, caring not a fig about them. They think too much of what they themselves do during the day. When they come home in the evening, they want to be served like kings and princes. Really, it is something very unfortunate. All husbands, sons and daughters must know that the poor wife and the mother are also human beings. She has the same feelings and desires as anyone else has.
