Answer: Shere Khan had attacked a group of people camping in the jungle. As the people ran away, a child escaped into the woods. Answer: The Red Flower was fire. Bagheera asked Mowgli to get it because every animal fears fire. No animal would be able to overpower Mowgli if he had fire with him. Answer: Yes, Akela felt a lot of affection for Mowgli. To begin with, Akela was the leader of the Pack of wolves that accepted the little boy in their pack after he was adopted by Mother Wolf. Then, along with Father Wolf, Bagheera and Baloo, Akela taught Mowgli the ways of the jungle.
Question 11: Read the extract and answer the questions briefly.
“There is no one in the jungle that knows that I, Bagheera, carry that mark – the mark of the collar….”
a. Why did Bagheera share this secret?
Answer: Bagheera shared this secret with Mowgli to persuade him that he must return to the world of men just as Bagheera had returned to the jungle. Bagheera, the panther was not meant to live in a cage as man’s toy. Similarly, Mowgli could no longer run with the wolves of the pack and must return to the world of men.
b. Did it help to convince Mowgli to take action that Bagheera wanted him to take?
Answer: Mowgli was not convinced by this as he still could not understand why any wolf would support Shere Khan as he considered them his brothers. Bagheera had to further explain to Mowgli why most members of the pack would turn against him to make his point.
Question 12: Did Mowgli know before Bagheera told him that Akela had missed his kill? How do you know?
Answer: While Mowgli ran to a nearby village to get the Red Flower or fire, he heard the yell of the Pack hunting with the young wolves and shouting out to their old leader Akela to show his strength. Soon, he heard the snap of Akela’s teeth that indicated that he had pounced upon a sambar but missed his hold.
Question 13: ‘Strike first and then give tongue,’ means strike first and then share your feelings. How do did the wolves’ behavior illustrate this?
Answer: ‘Strike first and then give tongue’ was the cunning policy of the wolves. They did not let Mowgli know that they were after his blood. He would only have found out once Akela missed his kill. Had it not been for Bagheera’s timely warning, Mowgli would have been handed over to Shere Khan.
