My Penmanship is Pretty Bad Questions & Answers
Question 1: Read and answer:
a. The opposite of capital is
Answer: Lowercase
b. The word synonymous with unlawful is
Answer: Crime
Question 2: What does the poet say about the space the letters take?
Answer: The poet says that the letters he writes take up so much space that they can’t be read because what needs to be in lowercase is in uppercase.
Question 3: Why the poet’s handwriting difficult to read? Give any three reasons mentioned in the poem.
Answer: The poet’s handwriting is so difficult to read because his ballpoint pen leaks, his p’s, q’s, r’s, and b’s are backward half the time, and his cursive writing lacks style.
Question 4: Read the lines and answer the questions:
My p’s and q’s and b’s,
Are backward half the time.
When letters look as bad as these,
Its probably a crime.
a. What does the poet mean by these lines?
Answer: The poet says that he writes some of his alphabets backwards sometimes. They look so bad that it would probably be a “language crime”.
b. What would letters p, q and b look like if they are backwards?
Answer: If written backwards, the letter p would look like d, the letter q would look by b, and the letter b would look like q.
c. What kind of problems could you face if you wrote letters backwards?
Answer: If we wrote letters backwards, all our spellings would be wrong and people would not understand what we were really trying to convey.
Question 5: Why does the poet think his writing should be unlawful? Does he really mean he should be sent to jail?
Answer: No, the poet does not actually mean that he should be sent to jail. He is just trying to say that no one should be allowed to write as badly as he does.
Question 6: What do you know about cursive style of writing?
Answer: Cursive writing is a style of writing where all the letters are joined together in a flowing manner. It is faster than using block letters.
Question 7: What do you think the poet is a serious person? What makes you think so?
Answer: The poet, Kenn Nesbitt, is not a serious person. He has no problem talking about his imperfections and poking fun at himself.
