Answer: People believed Narmada to be older than the Himalayan rivers. Scholars say that the rocks it flows over are so old that they were there when dinosaurs walked the Earth.

Question 5: How did the river Narmada get its name in the story?

Answer: Once, there was a severe drought. The Earth became parched and not a tree had leaves. Birds, animals and people died of thirst as they wandered in vain in search of water.

The Gods looked down from the sky and their hearts filled with compassion. They thought of Shiva who had been meditating until then on the peaks of the Amar Kantak and prayed to him to put an end to the months of thirst on earth.

Shiva nodded in answer and went back into meditation. He meditated so long so hard that his body began to heat up. It became so hot that he began to perspire. River of water streamed down his back and down the mountain-side deep into the valley below. Shiva looked down from the mountain-top and saw the stream. He was so delighted at the sight he saw that he blessed the sparkling stream. He named it Narmada, bringer of hope and gave it a blessing that it will be sacred and will flow forever.
