Professor Shonku’s Diary Questions & Answers
Question 1: Why did the narrator always give some money to Tarak Chattarjee?
Answer: The narrator always gave some money to Tarak Chatterjee because the latter had once been known to his father. The state of Tarak Chatterjee’s clothes showed the narrator that he wasn’t well off. This was another reason why the narrator tried to help him with some money.
Question 2: Why was the narrator surprised at what Tarak Chatterjee had brought for him this time?
Answer: Tarak Chatterjee always used to bring the narrator a story to read but this time, when he produced a diary instead of a story, the narrator was surprised.
Question 3: Who was professor Shonku? What was believed to have happened to him?
Answer: Professor Trilokeshwar Shonku was a scientist who had mysteriously disappeared about fifteen years ago. Some believed that he was killed while conducting an experiment, but others believed that he was still alive, hiding somewhere and continuing his work secretly.
Question 4: Who had got hold of Professor Shonku’s diary and how?
Answer: Tarak Chatterjee had got hold of Professor Shonku’s diary. When he came to know that a large meteorite had fallen in the Sunderbans, he went there hoping that many tigers would have been killed due to it. He thought he would be able to get some tiger skins and sell them at a good price. As he looked around, Tarak Chatterjee found Professor Shonku’s diary lying in the middle of the massive crater that had been created by the meteorite.
Question 5: “The meteorite. There is only one case, surely?” Who said this? Where had the meteorite fallen?
Answer: Tarak Chatterjee said this to the narrator. The meteorite had fallen in the Matharia district in the Sunderbans.

Answer: Tarak Chatterjee went to the site where the meteorite had fallen to find the skins of dead tigers. He wanted to sell them at a good price. He found no tiger skins there. All he found were some snake skins. In addition, he found a red diary lying in the middle of the massive crater formed by the meteorite.
Question 7: When did the narrator first realize that there was something odd about the diary?
Answer: It was after Durga Puja that the narrator first realised that there was something odd about the diary. When he pulled a fat dictionary out of a bookshelf, the forgotten diary slipped out from behind. He picked it up and opened it. He realised that the green ink in which everything had been written in it had changed to red.

Answer: Apart from the changing colour of the ink, Professor Shonku’s diary had a few other extraordinary things about it. Its pages were like elastic, so it was impossible to tear them. Even the narrator’s dog Bhulo could not do any damage to the diary with his sharp teeth. Then, the diary couldn’t be burnt when the narrator tried to do so, first with a lighted match and then by throwing it into the naked flames of a stove for five hours.
