Question 1: Who was Raja Birbal?

Answer: Raja Birbal was an advisor in the court of the Mughal emperor, Akbar.

Question 2: When was Birbal born?

Answer: Birbal was born in 1528.

Question 3: What was his original name?

Answer: His original name was Mahesh Das.

Question 4: What prize did the emperor offer to solve the problem?

Answer: The emperor offered to give five bags of gold to whosoever would solve the problem.

Question 5: What was the problem that the emperor asked the courtiers to solve?

Answer: Akbar drew a dark, thick line with a piece of charcoal on the marble floor. He asked the courtiers to make this line shorter but without touching, adding or rubbing out any part of it.

Question 6: How did Birbal solve the problem?

Answer: Birbal took the piece of charcoal and drew another line, next to the line Akbar had drawn. It was longer than the first one. Akbar’s line had thus become shorter.
