Question 1. What does Sarsamma Lalitha remember even after away from the game for so many years?

Answer: Sarasamma Lalitha remembers the enthusiasm with which people in her home state, Kerala, would cheer her on in those days when she was playing.

Question 2: Which incident stands out in her memory? Where were they going?

Answer: An incident that stands out in her memory is of the day she shook hands with India’s Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as a representative of the Indian Women’s Football team during a felicitation organised for them before the team left for Taiwan to compete in the 1981 Football World cup.

Question 3: Those were the days when women were generally not allowed to pursue sports, but our place was a bit different.

a. Why do you think women were not allowed to pursue sports?

Answer: In those days, women were generally not allowed to pursue sports because they were married off early and started a family soon after too. Not many women were entering the workforce, so many of them stayed at home.

b. Do you think this nation has changed today?

Answer: Yes, I think that notion is changing slowly. Women are joining the workforce in larger numbers and many of them are pursuing sports as a career.

Question 5: What is Lalitha’s dream today?

Answer: Lalitha’s dream today is to build up an all-women’s football team.

Question 6: Sarasamma Lalitha’s profile tells us that if one wants to succeed, he or she can do it in the face of all odds. Discuss.

Answer: Yes, Sarasamma Lalitha’s life shows us how she was able to succeed because of her determination, despite the odds. Even though she never had formal training in football or access to a coach, she observed others playing and learnt the game. She did not hesitate to join men playing football too, which shows her determination to learn.

Question 7: What do we need to do in order to encourage more women to play sports? How many sportswomen do you know about?

Answer: To encourage more women to play sports, we should encourage their family members to support them and let them play. We should also motivate women by talking about other women players who have succeeded despite the odds.
The other sportswomen I know about are: Dipa Karmakar (gymnast), Dipika Pallikal (squash), P. V. Sindhu (badminton), Sakshi Malik (wrestler), Mithali Raj (cricketer).
