Answer: A soak pit is made by digging a pit two fit wide, two feet long and two and a half feet deep. Then, a layer of small stone at the bottom of the pit is spread to the height of half a foot. Over this, a layer of broken bricks is piled to fill another half foot. On it, a piece of charcoal is put to make up half a foot more. After that, a layer of brick piece is put over the charcoal layer to another half a foot depth. And finally, the topmost layer of half foot is made with stones and gravel.

Answer: Sandhya learnt to make a compost pit during her holidays. It is useful to convert organic waste into rich and useful manure.

Question 5: How is a ‘compost pit’ made?

Answer: A compost pit is made by digging a shallow pit that is three feet long, three feet wide and half foot deep. Then fill it with brown and green material and top it with a thin layer of soil and dung. After that, sprinkle some water to make it just moist. Leave it for seven days. After seven days, turn the contents of the pit with a pitch fork. Poke three long sticks into the compost pit and leave them there. The sticks allow air to enter into the pit. After three to four months, the manure is ready.

Answer: Manure looks like a dark crumbly substance. It is neither smelly nor disgusting.
