Answer: Swaminathan was the first to leave the examination hall.

2. Swaminathan felt that he had done rather well.

Answer: Rajam felt that he had done rather well.

3. Rajam had written about half a page for the sixth question.

Answer: Sankar had written about half a page for the sixth question.

4. Mani was going to read a lot of books during the holidays.

Answer: Sankar was going to read a lot of books during the holidays.

5. Mani was going to burn his books.

Answer: Swami was going to burn his books.

6. Swaminathan was planning to sleep a lot.

Answer: Mani was planning to sleep a lot.

Question 2: What were the students asked to do during the holidays?

Answer: The students were asked not to waste their time, but to read story-books and glance through their books for the next class.

Question 3: Why do you think Swami left the hall early?

Answer: Out of the six questions set, Swami had answered the first question to his satisfaction, the second was doubtful, the third was satisfactory, the fourth, he knew, was clearly wrong. The sixth question was the best of the lot. It took only a minute to answer it. So, he left the hall early.

Question 4: How do you think Swami felt when the boys were discussing their answers? Had only the foolish ones written long answers?

Answer: Swami must have felt uncomfortable and even a little scared knowing that he had not done well. No, the ones who knew the answer had written at length.

Answer: No, Swami’s holiday plans did not include reading. He did not want to have anything to do with books.
