Answer: Sindbad was rescued from an island by a ship sailing for Basra. On the way, the ship stopped at an island on which stood a city with lofty spires and splendid houses. This was the City of Apes.

Answer: Sindbad was stranded in the City of Apes. The apes would raid the city at night and sleep in lofty trees in the valley during the day. Sindbad observed many people gathering pebbles and throwing them at the apes. The apes would wake up screaming, pluck coconuts from the trees and throw them at the people. People would gather the coconuts and sell them in the market. Sindbad joined them and became prosperous by selling coconuts, earning money and buying the merchandise of the place. Finally, a large vessel anchored off the island. Sindbad left the City of Apes in that vessel.

Question 9: Why did Sindbad yearn for another voyage? Give two reasons.

Question 10: Why did the inhabitants of City of Apes ‘sleep upon the sea at night, and dwell in the city by day’?

Answer: The inhabitants of the City of Apes slept in ships and boats during the night because the island was full of huge, deadly apes who would wander all over the city at night. If they came across people, they would kill and devour them at once. However, during the day the apes would leave the city and dwell on trees. So, the people went to the city in the daytime.

Question 11: ‘I earned my bread on that island in a strange manner’. How did Sindbad make his living on the island?

Answer: Sindbad observed a strange practice being followed by businessmen in the City of Apes during the daytime, which he himself adopted. They used to gather pebbles and throw them at the apes on coconut trees. The tormented apes would then pluck coconuts and throw them at the people. When the people had collected a large number of coconuts, they would sell them in the market. Sindbad too became a prosperous businessman in this way. With the money he earned by selling coconuts, he bought and stored a lot of local merchandise.
