Answer: After the death of his friend in the prison, Dantes again thought of committing suicide as he used to before he met Abbé Faria. However, excessive grief is like a storm and Dantes suddenly felt like the bark of a tree brought to the surface of the sea by the storm. His mood suddenly changed. He didn’t want to die anymore. Instead, he felt a strong desire for life and freedom.
Question 3: “Just God!” he muttered,” whence comes this thought?” What was the thought?
Answer: Dantes had started thinking of living and winning back the happiness and freedom that he had been deprived of due to his unjust imprisonment. He was determined to struggle for them till the very end.

Answer: When the jailer used to bring the evening meal for Dantes, he often found him sleeping. So, Dantes made sure that the jailer would mistake Faria’s body for him by laying it on his couch, tying around its head the rag he wore at night and covering it with a bedcover.
Question 5: What was the first risk that Dantes ran while trying to escape?

Question 6: How had Dantes planned to escape if he was buried in a grave?
Answer: If Dantes was buried in a grave, he had planned to first allow the gravediggers to cover him with earth. Then, in the darkness of the night, he would work his way through the soil and escape.
Question 7: ‘When seven o’clock came, Dantes agony really began.’ Why was Dantes agonized?

Question 8: How did Dantes plan to escape from the gravediggers?
Answer: If the gravediggers discovered that they were carrying a living person instead of a dead body, Dantes planned not to give them any time to recognise him. Question 9: Why did Dantes feel a sensation in which pleasure and pain were strangely mingled?
Answer: When the gravediggers carried Dantes out of the prison house thinking they were bearing the corpse of Faria, he felt the fresh night air. It filled his heart with both pleasure and pain. He was happy that his plan had succeeded till then. On the other hand, he felt very anxious and tense wondering whether he would escape or be caught by the gravediggers.
Question 10: Why do you think a weight had been tied to Dantes feet?
Answer: A weight had been tied to Dantes’ feet because the prisoners who died in the jail did not get buried under soil. Instead, they were thrown into their watery grave in the sea. Hence, a shot was tied to the feet of the corpse so that it would sink once it was flung into the sea.
