The Elephant and The Crocodile Questions & Answers
Question 1: What were the elephant and the crocodile quarrelling about?
Answer: The elephant and the crocodile were quarrelling about who was the better animal.
Question 2: Why did the elephant think he was better?
Answer: The elephant thought that he was better because he could tear up a tree, roots and all, with his trunk.
Question 3: Why did the crocodile disagree?
Answer: The crocodile disagreed because it believed that strength is not everything.
Question 4: Why did the crocodile think he was better?
Answer: The crocodile thought that he was better because his skin was tougher than the elephant and neither spear, arrow nor knife could hurt him.
Question 5: Who tried to settle the quarrel?
Answer: The King of Beasts tried to settle the quarrel.
Question 6: What test did the King of Beasts give to both the animals?
Answer: The King of Beasts asked both the animals to fetch him a brick from the top of the wall across the river.
Question 7: Did the crocodile succeed in getting the brick?
Answer: The crocodile, being a strong swimmer reached the opposite bank of the river first and was soon standing the wall. But, he didn’t succeed in getting the brick because he was not able to fetch it from the top of the wall.
Question 8: Did the elephant succeed in getting the brick to the King of Beasts?
Answer: Though the elephant with its long nose was able to pick up a brick from the top of the wall but he could not succeed in getting the brick to the King of Beasts. This is because while crossing the river back to the king, the elephant stumbled in water and the brick fell from his trunk and sank to the bottom of the river.
Question 9: How did both the animals manage to get the brick back to the King of Beasts?
Answer: When the brick fell from the elephant’s trunk and sank to the bottom of the river, the crocodile immediately dived down and brought it up in his large mouth. They both returned to the bank and the crocodile placed the brick in front of the lion.
Question 10: How did the lion reach to his decision/judgement?
Answer: The lion told the elephant that on account of his size and trunk, he was able to pick up the brick from top of the wall. But, having lost it in the river, he was unable to recover it.
He told the crocodile that he was unable to reach to the top of the wall but was able to dive and bring up the brick when it sank.
The lion reached to his judgement that both the animals wee strong and clever in their own specific ways.
Question 11: What lesson have you learnt from this story?
Answer: We have learnt that no one is better than the other. Everyone has got his own strengths and talents.
