Answer: The Lunar module was about to land in unfamiliar territory, headed straight for a football field sized crater filled with boulders which were the size of Volkswagens.
Question 5: Describe how the Eagle landed?

(c) What would this small step lead to?
Answer: This small step would lead to people believing that space missions could be successful, that it was possible to explore worlds beyond our own and open up research on future space exploration projects.

Question 7: Pick the sentences from the story that show that the problem they faced during landing was an unprecedented or a unique one.
Answer: The sentences from the story that show that the problem they faced during landing was an unprecedented or a unique one are:
‘Any second it could give up the ghost under the mounting pressure and nothing the two astronauts could do would save the mission.’
‘Emergencies were nothing new to Commander Neil Armstrong but he and his co-pilot Buzz Aldrin hadn’t even practiced for this one on the ground – no one believes it could happen.’
Question 8: Describe the moon landing in your own words.
Answer: The moon landing required years and months of preparation and research. Just before moon fall, there was an emergency situation as the Lunar Module’s vital guidance computer sounded an alarm. However, the astronauts responded promptly and Armstrong and Aldrin proceeded for their first manned landing on the moon’s surface while Michael Collins stayed in orbit around the moon. Racing against the computer, they slowed the Eagle down and pitched it upright to give them the first glimpse of their landing site. However, this was a wrong one, being a huge crater the size of a football field that would have dashed their efforts. Armstrong quickly accelerated the Eagle beyond the crater to a safer spot and finally the vessel landed on the surface of the moon.
Question 9: Would you agree that finding one’s way out of a difficult situation may be dangerous? Discuss with reference to the landing of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module on the surface of the moon.
Answer: Yes, I agree that finding one’s way out of a difficult situation can be dangerous. Especially in the case of the landing of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module we can see this as it landed with just 20 seconds of flying time left. In case, Armstrong had not been able to reach the landing ground in time, the vessel would have crashed and the lives of the astronauts would have been lost. It required great presence of mind and calmness to respond to the situation the way Armstrong did, to ensure that he was able to navigate themselves out of such a tricky situation.
Question 10: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the two astronauts chosen to land on the moon. Their colleague Michael Collins stayed on the orbit while they landed on the moon and carries out their experiments there. Would you say his role was less important of glorious than that of his colleagues?
Answer: No, I don’t think that Michael Collins’ role was less important because he had to remain in orbit. It was an important function which needed to be carried out, hence his presence was necessary. Although Aldrin and Armstrong have been mentioned more in media for their contributions but, it was a team effort.
