(a) Bishamber
Answer: Bishamber is Phatik’s maternal uncle. He is a loving and caring and brother. When he finds his sister complaining about Phatik being lazy, disobedient, and a perpetual nuisance, he tries to help her and offers to take his nephew to Calcutta. He also offers to make him study along with his own children. However, he is not mature enough to foresee the consequences of taking his nephew to his home as his wife is insensitive and not cooperative.
(b) Makhan
Answer: Makhan is Phatik’s younger brother who is more close to his mother than Phatik. The mother calls him as good as gold. However, he manipulates his mother by telling lies. He irritates Phatik by his frequent interference. He comes and sits on the log when Phatik and the other boys want to roll it away.
(c) Phatik’s aunt
Answer: She is insensitive, cruel and heartless. From the very beginning, she is not pleased with Phatik’s presence. She considers him an unnecessary addition to her family. She refers to him as a clumsy, country lout. Even when Phatik is critically ill, she calls him a nuisance. Due to his aunt’s fear, Phatik leaves her home even when he was critically ill. So, we can say that somewhere she is responsible for Phatik’s death.
(d) Phatik’s mother
Answer: Phatik’s mother is a widow with two sons. However, she is prejudiced against her elder son, Phatik and views him as disobedient, wild and lazy. She considers Makhan, her younger son, as good as gold, studious, and well-behaved. She thinks that Phatik would someday drown Makhan in the river or break his head in a fight or urge him on into some danger. So, she agrees to send him with her brother to Calcutta. But this doesn’t mean that she doesn’t love Phatik. She fees distressed when she sees Phatik’s eagerness to leave home and go with his uncle to Calcutta.

Phatik could not bear this so, even in the presence of his mother, he beat Makhan.
