Question 1: What made Gandhi very angry? Why?
Answer: The British government had passed a Salt Law according to which Indians were no longer allowed to make their own salt. Moreover, the British had also taken control of all the salt factories in the country and only they could make salt in India. Also, they had imposed a tax on Indian salt thereby making it more expensive. All this made Gandhi very angry. He was also angry that the just demands he had made to Lord Irvin had been refused.
Question 2: What was Gandhi’s plan?
Answer: Gandhi’s plan to start a march from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to Dandi in Gujrat which was 384 kilometres away, where large deposits of salt crystals were left on the sea shore. Gandhi planned to pick up the salt to show that no one could stop Indians from making their own salt.
Question 3: What did the British government do when people broke the salt law?
Answer: The British government reacted with force. All the leaders were arrested and all the salt pans that were found were destroyed.

Answer: The British government did not believe that people would be able to walk so far so did not try to stop the marchers. They treated it as a joke. But the Indians greeted the marchers with excitement. Children kept a look-out for the marchers. Villagers welcomed them and gave them food and shelter. Everyone was excited about the outcome of the march.
Question 5: What happened on 6 April, 1930?
Answer: On 6 April, 1930, the marchers reached Dandi late in the evening, less than a month after they had set out. The next morning, Gandhi walked to the Arabian Sea, bent down and picked up a lump of salty mud, breaking the Salt Law. Everyone cheered and shouted loudly. Gandhi boiled seawater, to get the illegal, but necessary salt. He told his supporters to do the same.
