Answer: Semyon collected the sticks from the forest and made flute out of a kind of reed. He made a number of flutes in his spare time and sent them to the market in the town to earn some money.

Answer: Vasily was squatting on the line as he was engaged in breaking a rail track so that it would move to one side. The plan was to ruin the reputation of the rail company by harming the passengers, to take his revenge from the senior officers of the railway company.
Question 6: Why did Semyon start running towards his hut?
Answer: Semyon started running towards his hut to get some tools to repair the broken rail track and to bring a red flag to stop the train. He wanted to save the lives of the passengers who were in the train.

Answer: Both Vasily and Semyon saved the lives of the train passengers. When Semyon saw the broken rail track and had no time to rush back to hut and brought the flag to stop the train, he took out a cotton scarf, injured himself and soaked his scarf in the blood and stood still waving his blood-stained flag. After few minutes, he fell unconsciously and the flag dropped down.
Meanwhile, a hand seized the flag and waved it high to stop the approaching train. This was none other than Vasily, who not only saved the lives of train passengers but also the life of his neighbour, Semyon.

Answer: Vasily wanted to cause a train accident to ruin the reputation of the rail company. He planned to take revenge from the senior rail officials by harming the passengers, whose safety was the responsibility of the rail company.

Answer: Vasily had helped Semyon because actually, he was good from heart. Only the circumstances compelled him to make such bad planning. But when he saw his neighbour’s life in trouble, he seized the blood-stained flag from Semyon’s hand and held it high to stop the train and to save the innocent lives.
