Answer: Grandfather chose Dehra to live in after his retirement as he could settle in a bungalow there and plant trees of all kinds around it. Also, he had served many years in the Indian Forest Service so, it was natural that he should know and understand and like trees. Moreover, he knew that in the fertile Doon Valley, plants and trees grew tall and strong.
Question 4: The bungalow that Grandfather built was in a used compound. True or FaIse? Give a reason in support of your answer.
Answer: True, because there were a lot of trees in the compound before the house was built and there was an old peepul tree which had forced its way through the walls of an abandoned outhouse also attracted his attention very much.
Question 5: Peepul trees are great show-offs. Pick out the words that the narrator uses to describe their leaves.

Question 6: Why do you think the narrator loved the banyan tree?

Question 7: How did the Grandfather ensure that the land did not turn into a desert?
Answer: Grandfather used to plant trees in a jungle for men who are cutting down trees without replacing them. He told the narrator that he planted trees not for people only, but for the forest also, and for the birds and animals that live there and need more food and shelter. Grandfather suggested us to plant two plants in place of every tree that is felled or cut down to ensure that the land did not turn into a desert.
Question 8: What were the reasons that motivated the narrator to help his Grandfather plant trees?
Answer: The narrator helped his Grandfather because the thought of a world without trees became a nightmare for him. The narrator never wanted to live on the tree less earth. He learnt from his Grandfather how trees help human beings – by keeping the desert away, by attracting rain, by stabilising the banks of river and for timber.
Question 9: How did Grandfather’s dream of a green world come true?
Answer: Grandfather used to plant trees not only in his garden but in the jungle also. He was fond of planting new saplings and watched them grow. After many years, the narrator visited the old house and found that the island became a small paradise. He noticed that many other small trees, wild plants and grasses had sprung up under the protection of the trees they placed. Thus, his Grandfather’s dream came true by multiplying the trees which they had planted.

Question 11: ‘We are not planting for people only’, said Grandfather. ‘We’re planting for the forest- and for the birds and animals who live here and need food and shelter’. Do you agree with Grandfather? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: Yes, I agree with Grandfather. Trees are very important, valuable and necessary to our existence as they have furnished us with two important life essentials, food and oxygen. Trees contribute to a rich healthy ecosystem. Animals, insects, birds etc. make their home in the trees, are dependent on them to get their food and make a diverse ecosystem. This balanced environment, in turn, contributes to the betterment of human beings.
