c. at the end of the day.
Answer: at the end of the day.
Question 2: Where do you think the speaker and her companion are headed?
Answer: The speaker and her friend seem to be headed towards a place of ‘rest’. Perhaps they are headed home after their long journey.
Question 3: What kind of a person does the speaker emerge as? Quote the relevant words to support your answer.
Answer: The speaker seems to be someone who takes great comfort from nature. She also seems to be someone who enjoys the solitude of the woods as she wants to spend some time in the peace and quiet that she senses around her. The words that suggest this are: ‘So total is the solitude,/ We safely may delay’, ‘The air is soft and sweet’, ‘How soothingly they spread’.
Question 4: Yes; I was tired, but not at heart;
No that beats full of sweet content….
The speaker is only tired physically but does not feel any mental fatigue as____________
a. she is satisfied and happy in her heart.
b. she looks forward to the end of the journey.

Answer: the journey through the woods is sweet and pleasant.
Question 5: The speaker tastes heaven while resting on the wayside like gypsies because___________
a. the glade offers solitude.

c. she can feel the adventure in her heart.
Answer: the glade offers solitude.
Question 6: And long the brightness of the west
Will light us on our devious way;
The speaker is relaxed because she feels that they can______
Answer: (b) Cover some more distance in the light of the setting sunset.
Question 7: These massive roots afford a seat,
Which seems for weary travelers made.
Answer: By these lines, the poet means that the tree roots are so massive in size and spread out that it feels like they have been made for weary travellers to take a seat and rest.
Question 8: Would you say that undertaking this journey is an act of course for a young woman? Why?
Answer: Yes, taking this kind of a journey in the woods is an act of courage for a young woman. This is because women were not allowed to go where they please. Even today, they are not allowed to travel as they please. But this woman insisted on this journey, showing her bravery and determination right from the start.
Question 9: Do you think their journey may be fraught with dangers? What could be the possible dangers?
Answer: Yes, their journey may have been fraught with dangers. There could be the danger of encountering wild animals in the woods, or even human beings who could have threatened them in some way. Being alone in the woods, they would have been vulnerable.
