Question 4: What type of example is an ecosystem?
Answer: Each ecosystem is an example of how animals and plants share these resources, adapt themselves to tide over unfavourable situations and maintain viable and healthy populations.
Question 5: What is the remarkable feature of an ecosystem?
Answer: A remarkable feature of the ecosystems is the basic stability of populations that they sustain, providing for a natural balance.

Question 6: What are important factors which keep animal populations in check?
Answer: One factor is the competition of animals for food. Individuals of the same species compete for the same source of food, with adverse impact on the physically unfit. Crowding also brings about other factors of destruction such as disease and malnutrition. Predation is yet another factor. Other factors that keep animal populations in check include adverse climate, natural calamities. loss of habitat, etc. Thus, populations are controlled by factors that define the capacity of the ecosystem.
Question 7: What is extinction? How does natural extinction take place?
Answer: Extinction is a natural phenomenon in the evolution of animals. It is irreversible and has been part of the evolutionary process which has produced more advanced forms of life over millions of years.
Certain species disappear gradually, as they become unable to withstand the competition from those that are better adapted. Other factors such as hunting animals, alteration of the environment, habitat destruction, pollution of the land, air and water, the human population explosion have been responsible for the extinction of animal species in recent times.
Question 8: How has the spread of civilisation and progressive exploitation of nature impacted wildlife adversely?
Answer: The spread of civilisation and progressive exploitation of nature has impacted wildlife adversely. The factorssuch as hunting animals, alteration of the environment, habitat destruction, pollution of the land, air and water, the human population explosion have been responsible for the extinction of animal species in recent times.
Question 9: How have deforestation and technological advancement negatively impacted wildlife?
Answer: Deforestation has been one of the major causes for the depletion of wildlife. With the increase in human population and the growing need for resources, forests were cleared or encroached upon for agricultural operations, for human habitation and for grazing their livestock.
Technological advancement and human progress had a direct bearing on the exploitation of natural resources. Forest trees are cut to yield timber for building houses, for making furniture and for using wood as fuel. Industries make a heavy demand on forest resources, such as wood for paper making, exploitation of gums and resins, mining of forest land for mineral ores, building materials, etc.
Question 10: What happens to the animals when their habitat is destroyed?
Answer: Habitat destruction has an adverse impact on wildlife as it leads to the loss of an environment which provides them food and habitat to facilitate rearing of their young ones. Wild animals are left with no alternative but to adapt, migrate or perish. Widespread habitat loss all over the country has diminished the population of many species, making them rare and endangered.
Question 11: What are the four pillars of conservation?
Answer: Conservation is said to stand on four pillars:
The first pillar is moral concern. It is our moral responsibility not to impoverish our natural heritage and we should make an effort to pass it on to our future generations.
The second pillar is aesthetic consideration. Nature is beautiful and we all enjoy the aesthetic pleasure provided by nature. Their care and preservation brighten our lives.
The third pillar is our need for sustenance – food and raw material for producing essential goods and products of daily use. If we do not conserve these resources and use them wisely, they may soon get depleted.
The fourth is the scientific pillar. All our technological and scientific progress would not have been possible without the natural resources. Our understanding, experimentation and utilisation of these resources for human benefit are the foundation of all our scientific progress.
Question 12: What is the key to progress?
Answer: Conservation of wild species of flora and fauna is the key to this progress.
