He went to the house despite the countryman’s warning because he was walking and wandering here and there for quite a long time and had become tired and cold.

Answer: The narrator hesitated to enter the house because the countryman warned him that something strange and mad thing was there in the house that was not good to see. Moreover, the queer-looking couple and the dark gloomy hall of the house seemed very unpleasant to him.

Answer: The old man’s son look was revealed by the narrator in his efforts to free his rug which was caught in the chair and the screen in front of the fire fell over with a crash. The narrator discovered that the old man’s son looked like a beast in the flickering light of the fire.
The old man explained that his son’s face had become disfigured in a burning house when he saved children from fire.
