Question 12: Compare and contrast the characters of Dan and Tommy. Give examples from the text.
(a) As a friend
Dan – He stood by Nat and tried to protect him even though he wasn’t sure if Nat had stolen the money or not. He also went out of his way to save Nat from being troubled by the other boys.
Tommy – He trusted Nat enough to show him where he kept the money, as he believed that Nat would not take the money. But when he lost the money, he joined the others in suspecting Nat and ill-treating him.
(b) Understanding people
Dan – He understood that Tommy was getting very upset about losing his money. So, he spoke up and told him to cool down.
Tommy – He did not try to see the situation from Nat’s point of view. And was hasty in judging and suspecting Nat.
(c) Regarding money
Dan – He considered personal relationships more important than money and hence did not hesitate to sell his book to help Nat. He also sold the book just for the amount of money he needed and did not try to make profit.
Tommy – He was very particular about money. Money was more important to him than personal relationships and he did not hesitate to suspect his friend. He was willing to part with his friend rather than with the money.
(d) Reaction to problems
Dan – He looked for solutions to problems. He did not know who had stolen the money, but he came up with a plan to repay the money and stop the other boys from troubling Nat. Also, he asked Tommy to cool down when Tommy grew angry at losing his money.
Tommy – He did not see his fault – he did not think that he had lost the money by not taking care of it. He could have reacted more calmly when he could not find his money.
(e) Basic nature – shows/hides feelings, etc.
Dan – He hid his true feelings and the true reason for repaying Tommy but felt relieved when he could finally speak about it.
Tommy – Tommy was impulsive, both when he lost as well as when he found his money. When his money was found, Tommy dashed back to the house, yelling out loud that everything was fine. This shows his eagerness to resolve the situation with Nat.
