Want To Jump On The Bed Questions & Answers
Question 1: Who is the speaker in the poem? Is she young or old?
Answer: The speaker is the mother. She is not old but young as she says ‘When I’m an old lady.”
Question 2: Read and answer the questions:
(a) Is the speaker an old lady now? How do you know?
Answer: No, the speaker is not an old lady now, because in the first stanza, she says ‘When I’m an old lady’ indicating that she is not so now. She is telling what she will do when she gets old.
(b) Does she have more than one kid? Pick the word which lets you know the answer.
Answer: Yes, she has more than one kid. We know that because she says, ‘I’ll live with each kid’ indicating there is more than one kid.
(c) How does she plan to get back at her children?
Answer: She plans to do the same naughty things they did when they were small to get back at them.
(d) Pick the words which means the same as: child, give, joy.
Answer: Child – Kid, Give – bring/ Pay, Joy – Happiness.
Question 3: What does she mean when she says, ‘I want to pay back all the joy’?
Answer: When she says ‘I want to pay back all the joy’, she means the joy which her children gave by being good and naughty.
Question 4: Is it clear in the last stanza who the speaker is? Why do you think she wants to do such things to her children?
Answer: Yes, it is very clear that it is mother. She wants to do all the good and naughty acts to make her children know what she went through.
Question 5: Read and answer the questions:
(a) Pick the words which tell us that the speaker will refuse to eat healthy food.
Answer: The lines ‘I’ll not eat my green beans, salad or meat/ I’ll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table’ tell us that the speaker will refuse to eat healthy food.
(b) Why do we gag on something we eat?
Answer: We gag when something tastes so awful that it becomes difficult to swallow.
(c) Why does the speaker say that she will run? What is he/she trying to escape?
Answer: The speaker says she will run in order to escape being force-fed healthy food, or get scolded for spilling milk.
Question 6: Read and answer the questions:
‘She’s so sweet when she is sleeping!’
(a) Whose imagination is this?
Answer: This is mother’s imagination.
(b) Will this ever happen?
Answer: No, it most likely won’t happen because the mother would actually not do any of the naughty things she talks about.
